How does a nice glass of chemicals, carcinogens, and methane sound?

What is fracking?

Hydraulic Fracturing, or “fracking” is a process where millions of gallons of water, chemicals, and sand are injected into shale rock to created channels in the rock and release the natural gas to be collected and used.

Fracking poses great threats to not only the environment, but also the community. The process can pollute water supplies when the chemicals leak into underground wells, or when accidents spill the fluids into rivers or streams. There have been numerous cases of water contamination near drilling sites around the country. It can cause natural gas to migrate into drinking water sources, which is not only harmful to our health, but it can cause wells and houses to explode.

And It Could Be Coming to Your Backyard.

Ohio Governor Kasich strongly supports inviting drillers into the state, especially in the oil-rich Utica and Marcellus shale formations in the eastern portion of the state. Legislation from the Governor support allowing extraction on public land, going as far as to open 200,000 acres of state parks to fracking operations.

Do you know if your water’s clean?

Take action and help ban fracking in your area!

Ohio’s ground water might be next.

Know the potential dangers

Learn more about plans to frack in Ohio

Demand research on the environmental effects of fracking and tighter regulations

Sign the online petition supporting a moratorium on tracking in Ohio until a proper environmental study can be conducted: here. (http://chn.ge/sKHRwg)

Join Green Oxford

Help us boost awareness of fracking on campus and helping to save our state’s water supply!

Green Oxford hit the ground running this semester. With many new members with exciting and fresh ideas we have packed our schedules in and out of meetings. We have established five primary working groups focusing on promoting water reusable water bottles, on-campus recycling, food waste awareness, clean energy and environmental awareness.

Outside of our weekly meetings, we have had an indoor BBQ and our first social last weekend. We joined Hueston Woods Naturalist Chad Smith to help clean up the trails and paint signs around the park. We also volunteered at Harvest Moon Fest Uptown and met with other community members to promote environmental awareness to greater Oxford community.

On October 21st we will be sending Green Oxford-ites to the Midwest Powershift in Cleveland, Ohio. Students from across the Midwest will join together and join in the fight for climate justice. If you are interested in participating in this event or want more information, please contact Christian Adams at adamscf@muohio.edu.
