2011 – 2012 Officers
Ian Winner, President. Ian is a senior Business Management and Leadership Major with an Environmental Principles and Practices Co-Major. He joined Green Oxford in his sophomore year and immediately began leading a group to promote recycling on campus. That year, the group dumped garbage on the lawn near Shriver, sorted through it and found that over 26% of the trash could have been recycled. Green Oxford’s actions raised the awareness of both students and the Administration and led to the introduction of ten outdoor recycling bins on campus.
Last year as an Executive Member of Green Oxford, Ian worked with Bogan Elementary School to sell “Bogan Bags” at sporting events on campus. By buying these reusable bags, patrons supported environmental education at the school. Green Oxford helped raise over $200 for the school. Ian also helped form a partnership between Green Oxford and the Miami Natural Areas to promote the outdoors and trails at the university.
Ian also became a campus intern for the Sierra Student Coalition, the national student-run chapter of the Sierra Club. We introduced the Beyond Coal Campaign at Miami to help eliminate the use of the on-campus coal plant and promote cleaner, renewable energy resources. This campaign successfully worked with the Administration to publish the Sustainability Commitments which, among other things, commits to shutting down the on-campus coal plant by 2025.
Another success of last year was receiving a $1,000 grant from Brita. Ian co-wrote the grant with several Green Oxford members along with Dr. Prytherch, Miami’s Sustainability Coordinator. Green Oxford plans to use this money to install a water filtration system and promote reusable water bottles.
This year, as President of Green Oxford, Ian will continue to collaborate with school, city, and community members to promote sustainability projects. This will be Green Oxford’s most exciting year yet!
